The Don’t Just Exist Philosophy

“Don’t just exist. Do something everyday that scares you. Even if it’s just getting out of bed in the morning.” ™

~ Brittany Deventer

I have lived an incredible life despite constant emotional waves by using the mantra quoted above. If I do something every day that scares me, no matter how small the feat, I’ve exercised my mind, body and soul, and that feeling of accomplishment will drive me to tomorrow.

So here’s the deal. If you’ve found this post, chances are you’re feeling pretty low. Don’t be too hard on yourself and don’t give yourself too much to do. Don’t overwhelm yourself. Stick to simple. Do one thing that scares you today, thank yourself and keep going. Searching the internet for help must have been scary, so I give you permission to use finding and reading this article as your one scary feat for the day. Congratulations! If you’re up for facing another fear, then go for it!

For me, some days the scary thing is big, like learning to do a back flip or starting a new job. Some days the only strength I can muster is to get up out of bed, and maybe even have a glass of water. The trick is to accept whatever strength you have! Don’t beat yourself up. Concentrate on exercising your mind, body and soul every day with one act of bravery. That’s it! Seriously.

Here’s an example: On days I want to lay in bed all day and not get up, I usually start thinking about what a failure I am. – I’m not a failure, but that’s where my head goes. – If I get up, if I just sit up in bed, I’ve accomplished my one goal of facing a fear today! And by facing that fear I’ve exercised my mind, body and soul! Think about it. I’ve exercised my mind by overcoming the fear of simply sitting up and rising out of bed. I’ve exercised my body by moving. And by exercising my mind and my body, I’ve inherently exercised my soul. With one small move, I’ve completed my goal for the day.

While that might not take all the sadness and stress of the day away, I’ve accomplished my goal. I have something to be proud of. So, even if I decide to lie back down and think about the meaning of life for the rest of the day, I don’t have to compound that by hating myself. I have accomplished my goal. Tomorrow, I can face two fears if I’m feeling up to it.

So I encourage you to follow this philosophy. It has worked for me on my high days and my low days. Maybe it can work for you too.

You are not alone. One day at a time. One fear at a time.

Love yourself.
